Boy Injured as Drone Drops 24,000 Francs Over Zurich Park

A boy got hurt after a drone dropped lots of money in a park in Zurich. The police are checking what happened at Blatterwiese near China Garden. Some people are wondering why this event took place.

24,000 francs fell in Zurich park

On May 11 at 8pm, a drone with a bag of money flew over Blatterwiese near China Garden in Zurich. It’s a famous place for swimming and picnics. The drone was controlled by someone known as oraclecomicsswitzerland on social media. They said they would drop 24,000 francs in 10 franc notes for people to take.

Wearing a gold mask and black hoodie, the person tried to calm the crowd under the drone. One person said, “Someone with the mask from the video told us a drone was coming to drop money. Then money started falling.”

Money fall leads to rush and injury

When the money fell, there was chaos. Thousands of 10 franc notes caused a rush. One person said, “I’m glad I got out without getting hurt. I think someone broke their arm.” The police said a 12-year-old got hurt by a sharp object and went to the hospital in an ambulance. Judith Hödl from Zurich City Police said the drone and gathering didn’t have permission from the council. They are investigating if any drone rules were broken.

Why did so much money fall in Blatterwiese?

People are asking why this happened. The person behind it did two other things before: showing an “infinite power source” near Zurich HB and a woman lifting a big car. Then they dropped money near China Garden. These were all part of promoting a new comic book.

Zurich police are being investigated after leaving a woman alone on an island.

A recent report from the Ombudsman’s Office of Canton Zurich revealed that a complaint was made against the local maritime police after they left a woman stranded on an island. The police have admitted that what they did was wrong.

Woman stranded on Lake Zurich island

The incident happened in January 2023 when a man and a woman were on Lake Zurich on their new boat. To take some photos of the boat, the man docked on an island, either Ufenau or Lützelau (the report doesn’t say which). He let the woman get off the boat there.

While the man was showing off the boat on the lake, a police boat came to the island. They asked the woman for her ID. She explained that her wallet was on the boat. The police then went to talk to the man. Unfortunately, the police had a warrant for the man’s arrest because he hadn’t paid a 500-franc fine. They arrested him and took his boat.

The man told the officer that with the boat gone, the woman had no way to leave the island without help. The officer told him to use his phone to arrange and pay for another boat to pick her up. But he refused. The police then called the woman and explained the situation. When she asked for help, the officer said it wasn’t their problem and that they were too busy to help.

Ombudsman acknowledges unusual nature of abandonment over fine

So, the police and the confiscated boat left, leaving the woman alone on the island. She only had a phone with low battery and no wallet. Thankfully, another boat eventually came by and helped her get back to shore.

The Ombudsman for Canton Zurich said it was strange for a woman to be left alone on an island in winter because of a 500-franc fine. The maritime police admitted that what the officer did was wrong, and they’re now reviewing what happened internally.

Heavy Jams Expected During May Holidays

As Switzerland gears up for the upcoming public holidays, travelers and drivers should brace themselves for major traffic congestion, especially during the weekends of Ascension and Pentecost. Here’s what you need to know:

Heavy Traffic Predicted in Mid-May

Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) has issued a warning, anticipating significant traffic congestion on Swiss roads and highways during the Ascension weekend (May 9 to 12) and Pentecost weekend (May 18 to 20) in 2024. With popular destinations like Ticino and Italy attracting many visitors during spring, the main thoroughfare through the mountains, the Gotthard, is expected to bear the brunt of the traffic.

Gotthard Tunnel: A Bottleneck

TCS reports that traffic congestion in and around the Gotthard Tunnel has been worsening in recent years. Data from the Federal Roads Office reveals a notable increase in traffic passing through the Gotthard, with numbers spiking on Ascension Sunday and Pentecost Sunday.

Expect Delays at Gotthard

Motorists should anticipate delays of up to three hours or more near the Gotthard Road Tunnel on May 9, 12, and 20. TCS advises adding extra travel time of two to three and a half hours during peak congestion. Other mountain routes such as San Bernardino, Mont-Blanc Tunnel, and Grand-Saint-Bernard Tunnel are also expected to experience heavy traffic.

Tips to Avoid Holiday Traffic

To minimize the impact of traffic jams, TCS spokesperson Laurent Pignot suggests leaving early in the morning, late at night, or even before the holidays begin. Regularly checking navigation apps for alternative routes is also advisable. For those considering alternatives to driving, Swiss Federal Railways has announced expanded public transport services between northern cities and Ticino during the holiday weekends. Additionally, car trains like the Lötschberg and Simplon offer alternatives to bypass congested roads.

By planning ahead and considering alternative transportation options, travelers can navigate the holiday traffic more smoothly and enjoy a stress-free journey during the May holidays in Switzerland.

Swiss Referendums June 2024: A Guide for Expats

On June 9, Swiss citizens will cast their votes on four national referendums, including one on capping health insurance costs. Here’s what you need to know about these upcoming referendums and how they affect expats.

Understanding the Referendums

In March 2024, Switzerland held national referendums, and now, on June 9, people across Swiss cities and cantons will vote on four new proposals. Two pertain to health insurance costs, one addresses energy policies, and the last focuses on medical consent rules.

  1. Premium Relief Initiative (Prämien-Entlastungs-Initiative)

This initiative aims to cap the cost of basic health insurance, ensuring individuals spend no more than 10% of their annual salary or income on premiums. The plan involves subsidies from both federal and cantonal governments to keep premiums affordable.

  1. Cost Brake Initiative (Kostenbremse-Initiative)

This initiative also concerns health insurance premiums, proposing that increases be linked to salaries and economic growth. If premiums rise faster than wages over a two-year period, cost-cutting measures would be required from both the government and Swiss cantons.

  1. Changes to Swiss Energy Policy

The proposed amendment to the Swiss Energy Act and Electricity Supply Act aims to boost energy production through renewables, including funding for solar panels and streamlining planning permission for wind and solar farms.

  1. “For Freedom and Physical Integrity” Popular Initiative

This initiative seeks to protect individuals’ freedom to make medical decisions, particularly regarding vaccinations. It emphasizes that individuals should not face punishment or disadvantages for refusing medical interventions.

Implications and Counter-Proposals

Both initiatives have garnered support and opposition, with counter-proposals offering alternative solutions. For instance, a counter-referendum proposes a minimum subsidy for premiums if the Premium Relief Initiative is rejected.

Switzerland Votes

Mark your calendars for June 9 as Switzerland heads to the polls. Stay informed and make your voice heard on these critical issues. The next set of referendums is scheduled for September 22, 2024.

8 Important Events in Switzerland for May 2024

As spring blossoms and warmer days approach, Switzerland gears up for a month packed with significant changes and events. Whether it’s about driving fines, banking adjustments, or exciting new flights, here are eight key happenings to keep an eye on:

1. Traffic Violations Cross Borders

Starting May 1, 2024, Swiss drivers caught speeding in Germany and vice versa will face penalties regardless of their home country. Thanks to a new agreement, Swiss authorities will cooperate with their German counterparts in enforcing fines. For instance, Swiss drivers nabbed for speeding in Germany with fines exceeding 70 euros will be obligated to pay up, even upon returning to Switzerland. Conversely, German motorists facing fines over 80 francs in Switzerland will also be accountable.

2. Decline in Swiss Bank Interest Rates

With the Swiss franc’s strength and inflation stabilizing, several Swiss banks have opted to lower interest rates on accounts. Effective May 1, Appenzeller Kantonalbank will reduce rates by 0.2 percentage points. Similarly, other banks like Obwaldner Kantonalbank and Nidwaldener Kantonalbank are adjusting rates based on account balances. Even online banks like Neon are following suit, reflecting a broader trend in the banking sector.

3. Cannabis Trial in Canton Zurich

Following the lead of other Swiss cities, Canton Zurich launches its cannabis trial on May 2. This trial allows two-thirds of volunteers to purchase cannabis from authorized shops, while the remainder continues buying from the black market. Lasting five years and costing 1.5 million francs, this trial aims to gather valuable data on cannabis regulation.

4. RailCoaster Launch between Switzerland and EuropaPark

Adventure enthusiasts can rejoice as a new direct rail service between Switzerland and EuropaPark debuts on May 18. This service offers thrill-seekers a convenient journey from Basel SBB to the theme park, inclusive of a return trip. Dubbed the “RailCoaster,” this service promises excitement and ease of access to one of Europe’s most popular attractions.

5. SBB Worker Wage Increase

In May 2024, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) announces a 1 percent average salary increase for its employees. Additionally, SBB distributed a one-time inflation bonus earlier in the year, reflecting its commitment to its workforce.

6. SWISS Introduces Direct Flights to Seoul

SWISS announces the commencement of direct flights from Zurich to Seoul starting May 7, offering travelers a new destination to explore. This expansion follows recent route additions like Zurich-Washington DC, with Zurich-Toronto flights expected to launch soon.

7. Labour Day and Ascension Holiday

May brings two public holidays to Switzerland: Labour Day on May 1 and Ascension Day on May 9. These holidays vary in observance across cantons but generally provide residents with time off to celebrate or relax.

8. End of Spring School Holidays

For students in Graubünden, Schwyz, Uri, Valais (German-speaking part), and Zurich, May marks the end of spring break. By May 13, students will return to school, marking the transition from holiday mode to academic focus.

Labour Day Celebrations in Switzerland

Labour Day, also known as May Day or International Workers’ Day, is approaching in Switzerland. It’s a time when people in several Swiss cantons enjoy a well-deserved break from work. Let’s explore where the weather will be the most favorable for your Labour Day plans.

Where to Expect Time Off

On May 1st, eight Swiss cantons, including Zurich, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Land, Jura, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, and Ticino, will observe Labour Day with a day off. In Aargau and Solothurn, workers typically have a half-day off. While some may use this day for protests, many families opt for leisure activities. Moreover, with May 1st falling on a Wednesday in 2024, taking just two days off work can yield a luxurious five-day weekend!

Seeking the Best Weather

For those planning outdoor activities during the Labour Day weekend, it’s essential to consider the weather forecast. Here’s where you can expect the most favorable conditions:

Central Switzerland and Zurich:

According to meteorological forecasts, central Switzerland, Zurich, and Graubünden will experience the best weather during the Labour Day weekend. However, expect partly cloudy skies throughout the region.

Temperature Variations:

Temperatures may vary across different areas. Cooler temperatures, around 17-18 degrees Celsius, are expected in places like Lausanne, Geneva, Ticino, and around Lake Neuchâtel. In contrast, warmer temperatures, ranging from 23 to 24 degrees Celsius, are anticipated in Lucerne, Zurich, and Basel. Although temperatures are rising, swimming might still be too chilly, with water temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius.

Post-Labour Day Forecast:

After May 1st, heavy rainfall is expected across Switzerland on May 2nd and 3rd, particularly on Friday. Temperatures during this period will range from 12 to 19 degrees Celsius. However, the rain is likely to clear up by Saturday morning.

Return of Sunshine:

Fortunately, sunny weather is forecasted to return from the middle of Saturday through Sunday. Eastern Switzerland will enjoy the best weather conditions, with temperatures between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius. Even in other parts of the country, expect partly sunny skies and warm temperatures.

As Labour Day approaches, plan your activities wisely to make the most of the weather conditions in Switzerland. Whether you’re relaxing at home or exploring the outdoors, knowing where to find the best weather will enhance your Labour Day weekend experience.

Moving House in Switzerland: A Simple Guide to Changing Your Address

Moving to a new address in Switzerland is a big step, whether it’s for work reasons or to be closer to family. Here’s a simple guide to help you through the process:

Informing Authorities:

When you move to a new place in Switzerland, you need to tell the local authorities about your move. Some areas let you do this online, but it’s good to know what you’ll need to do and what documents you’ll need to provide.

Registering Your Move:

Once you’ve found a new home, you have 14 days to let your new local council know about your move. You’ll need to unregister from your old council and register with the new one. Everyone in your household, including kids, needs to do this.

Using the Online Portal:

There’s a website called eUmzugCH that makes changing your address easier. It means you don’t have to go to your local council in person. This is important for making sure you’re taxed correctly and get all the benefits you’re entitled to.

Key Documents:

When you change your address, you’ll need to provide certain documents, like your passport, residence permit, birth certificates for any children, marriage or divorce papers, your AHV number, rental contract for your new place, health insurance cards for everyone, and some money for fees.

Cost:

Changing your address can cost between 40 and 200 Swiss francs, depending on where you’re moving and whether you do it online or in person.

Who to Tell:

Once you’ve officially changed your address, you need to let other people and companies know, like your landlord, bank, utility companies, your child’s school, and the post office. The post office can even help you notify some businesses for a fee.

By following these steps, you can make your move to a new address in Switzerland as smooth as possible.

The Böögg Will Be Burned in 2024: Important Information for Sechseläuten Fans

For those who were disappointed by the cancellation of the Böögg burning ceremony at Sechseläuten in Zurich this year, there’s good news: the tradition will continue in 2024. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Was the Böögg Burning Cancelled?

Due to strong winds on April 15, authorities in Zurich had to cancel the burning of the Böögg at Sechseläuten, a festival celebrating the historical shift of working hours. This cancellation saddened many, as it was the first time in the tradition’s long history that the snowman wasn’t burned as planned. The Böögg, filled with explosives, was removed from the pyre to prevent any accidents.

What Does the Failed Burning Mean for Weather?

According to legend, the longer it takes for the Böögg to burn and explode, the worse the summer weather will be. Some in Zurich worried about this superstition, especially when the weeks following the cancellation brought freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Where and When Will the Böögg Be Burned in 2024?

The Böögg will meet its fiery end on June 22, 2024, in Heiden, a town in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The site chosen for the ceremony, Streuliwiese, offers a beautiful view of Lake Constance. Officials selected Heiden because of its good public transport connections, experience in hosting large events, and ample hotel accommodations.

What Can Sechseläuten Fans Expect?

While the details are still being finalized, authorities assure that the celebrations will include Zurich guilds, guests, and, of course, the Böögg himself. Although the fire may not be as large as in Zurich, the event promises to be a memorable one. Sechseläuten fans who were disappointed by this year’s cancellation are encouraged to join the festivities in Heiden on June 22, where they can celebrate the burning of the Böögg, albeit with a slight delay.

Switzerland Embarks on Largest-Ever 4-Day Workweek Trial

Switzerland is about to start its biggest ever experiment with a four-day workweek. This project aims to see if it’s possible for both employers and employees to work fewer days while still earning the same pay. It’s the first time such a trial will happen in Switzerland, and it will last for six months.

Can Fewer Days Mean More Productivity?

The idea behind this study is to find out if reducing the number of workdays is feasible in Switzerland. Local businesses are being asked to join the project, which will start in October 2024 and run until March of the following year. During this time, between 10 and 50 companies will cut down their workweek by at least four hours, while keeping pay levels the same.

Learning from Global Success Stories

Similar trials have been successful in other countries. The UK conducted a large study involving nearly 3,000 workers from various industries, which showed positive results. Many companies chose to continue with the four-day workweek even after the trial ended, citing reduced stress and burnout among employees.

Exploring the Health Impact of Working Less

In Switzerland, the focus of the study will be on how working less affects people’s health. Experts are interested to see if the results differ from those in other countries, considering Switzerland’s unique work culture and productivity levels.

Balancing Innovation with Economic Concerns

While some believe that a shorter workweek could improve work-life balance, others, including the Swiss government, are skeptical. They argue that it might not benefit every industry and could even be harmful to the economy. However, proponents of the idea hope that this trial will spark conversations about work arrangements and possibly lead to changes in future work contracts.
