Switzerland has laid the new groundwork for an EU agreement.

The Swiss government has unveiled a new plan to mend strained ties with the EU that have developed over the past two years.

In addition to existing agreements in the areas of air, land, and technical trade barriers, agriculture, and free movement of people, Switzerland has focused on market access for electricity supply and food safety.

A swift return to the top tier of the EU’s Horizon Europe and Erasmus research and educational programs are also priorities for the Federal Council, as well as improved cooperation in the health sector.

The goal is to incorporate these objectives into a new negotiating mandate in the fall.

The government stated on Wednesday that these agreements should not compromise Switzerland’s “essential interests,” such as job and wage security.

Furthermore, Switzerland seeks to create a system of dispute resolution that is acceptable to both parties.

How will the EU and Switzerland resolve their differences?

The EU has long insisted that the current jumble of bilateral agreements that have been hammered out over the years be replaced with a fundamental set of principles to govern political and economic relations.

But in 2021, when Switzerland walked away from the negotiating table, negotiations on a new framework treaty came to an end.

Both parties have held several exploratory discussions after engaging in a verbal battle to try and restart formal negotiations.

Presently, each strategic area is the subject of detailed plans being developed by some Swiss ministries.

Livia Leu, the State Secretary of Switzerland, will no longer serve as the country’s chief negotiator as of the end of August.
