Six skiers have lost their lives in Canton Valais due to heavy snowfall.

The authorities there have issued warnings about avalanches following nearly 0.5 meters of snow in just 24 hours last weekend.

Avalanche Risks Prompt Authorities to Issue Warnings

Unfortunately, five of six missing ski tourers were found dead, along with an off-piste skier who was caught in an avalanche.

The recent weather in Switzerland has brought back winter conditions and freezing temperatures, especially in the mountains. The most significant snowfall occurred in Canton Valais, with 50 centimeters falling in just one day.

Road Access Blocked to Key Locations

This sudden heavy snow has significantly increased the risk of avalanches, leading to road closures, including access to the Saas-Fee ski resort and the entire Saas Valley.

Several roads, including those between Zenschmieden and Eisten, Simplon and Gondo, and Täsch and Zermatt, are closed due to the heavy snow. Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution and plan their journeys using the latest information from Touring Club Switzerland.

Tragedy Strikes Ski Touring Group Near Zermatt

The adverse weather conditions also affected a group of six Swiss ski tourers who went missing near Zermatt.

Despite an emergency signal detected at 8 pm on Saturday, rescue operations were delayed due to the harsh weather.

Extensive Search Ends in Grief

With assistance from the Swiss Army and six rescue helicopters, authorities conducted an extensive search, but unfortunately, five members of the group were found dead. The search for the sixth member is ongoing.

Authorities Pledge Investigation

Authorities emphasized that they did their best to find the missing skiers alive but were hindered by freezing conditions. The cause of their deaths is yet to be confirmed, and a thorough investigation is promised.

Tragically, another incident occurred when an off-piste skier was caught in an avalanche at Val Ferret.

Rescue Efforts Unsuccessful

Despite being rescued and rushed to the hospital, the skier passed away.

For all skiers and snowboarders, authorities in Valais are urging extreme caution in avalanche-prone areas.

Elevated Avalanche Warnings in Effect

Currently, a level three “considerable danger” avalanche warning is in effect for most of the Swiss Alps, with a level four “high danger” warning for the Saas-Fee region.
