Why are American fighter jets buzzing over Switzerland this week?

Over the next couple of days, Switzerland’s gonna be rockin’ and rollin’ to the sweet sounds of American fighter jets as they zip and zoom through the Swiss landscapes. But hold on, before you start thinking Switzerland’s becoming the 51st state, there’s a simple reason behind this airshow.

Swiss and US fighter pilots team up for some training

The Swiss Air Force spilled the beans to 20 Minuten that they’re playing host to a gang of US fighter jets from September 18 to 21. Two F-16 fighters are making the journey from their Italian base in Aviano to Switzerland.

But don’t worry, this isn’t the start of World War III. Instead, these American jets are teaming up with two Swiss F/A-18 fighters for some joint exercises right over the Swiss skies. According to 20 Minuten, the plan is to practice air defense maneuvers, share some war stories, and overall just get better at what they do. If you want a front-row seat, head over to Payerne in Canton Vaud – that’s where the Swiss jets call home.

The Swiss Army Chief has some concerns

Even though Switzerland likes to stay out of other countries’ military business and isn’t part of NATO, they do team up with others for drills now and then. This particular get-together comes hot on the heels of the Swiss Army’s top dog, Thomas Süssli, saying that Switzerland’s defensive game needs a boost. He reckons they’re running low on supplies and stamina, especially for big, armored operations. Süssli thinks if Switzerland wants to step up its defense game, they need to learn a thing or two from NATO – though he’s not shouting from the rooftops for Switzerland to join the club.
