Why is Switzerland asking people to bury underwear?

The Swiss government wants to know about soil quality. They asked people to bury their old underwear. This helps them learn about the soil in Switzerland.

Swiss people bury their underwear

Starting in April 2024, anyone living in Switzerland can join the “Exhibit Underpants” project. This is the second time they’re doing this. It’s organized by the University of Zurich, the Federal Office of Agriculture, and Swiss regions.

How to join:

  1. Download the project’s app.
  2. Dig a 30-centimeter hole in the ground on April 20 or 21, 2024.
  3. Put your old cotton underwear in the hole.
  4. Use the app to tell where you buried your underwear.
  5. Dig it out on June 15 or 16 and take a picture.

Why bury underwear?

The government wants to study soil. They say soil is important for nature and for people. Soil helps forests, fields, and keeps water clean. If the underwear is still there after some time, it means the soil might not be healthy. But if it’s gone, it’s a sign that the soil is good.

This project helps people learn about soil and how to make it better.
